Keeping Christ in Christmas
We often hear a lot about keeping Christ in Christmas. Some people get quite upset when they hear people using the phrase "Happy Holidays" rather than "Merry Christmas." I also prefer the phrase "Merry Christmas" to "Happy Holiday." In fact, using "Merry Christmas" for my Christmas greeting is so important to me that I refuse to purchase or even use Christmas cards that have the phrase "Happy Holidays" rather than "Merry Christmas." However, I also recognize that people who are not followers of Jesus Christ cannot truly keep "Christ in Christmas" even if they say, "Merry Christmas." In addition, there are many non-believers and many businesses that are not really able to keep Christ in Christmas because their lives and their businesses are not focused on following Jesus.
There is really only one way to keep Christ in Christmas. The way that we truly keep Christ in Christmas is to make sure that Jesus Christ is the Lord and Master of our lives everyday. If Christ has first place in our hearts, we will be more concerned about what God tells us to say and what God tells us to do. If Christ is the center of our lives, we will not get caught up in the commercialism of Christmas because we will realize that commercialism is not a valid part of a Christian's observance of Christmas.
If Christ is first in our lives, we will make sure that we tell our children and grandchildren the stories of Jesus much more than the stories of Santa Claus. If Christ is first in our lives, we will make sure that we give our tithes (10%) and our offerings (everything above our tithes such as our gifts to international missions) to God before we consider purchasing anything for ourselves or our family or friends. If Christ is first in our lives, we will be more concerned with how we use the opportunities of the Christmas season to witness for Jesus than with whether or not we attend any Christmas parties or activities. If Christ is first in our lives, we will make sure that worship is more important in our Christmas celebrations even that family time or gift giving.
How can we keep Christ in Christmas? We keep Christ in Christmas by trusting Christ as our Lord and Savior and making sure that others see Christ in everything we do at Christmas and every other day of the year.
Help me to keep Christ first in my life so that others may see Christ in me. I pray that everything I do and everything I spend this Christmas would honor you and bring attention to Jesus. Forgive me for getting caught up in the "busy-ness" and commercialism that surrounds Christmas. Help me to spend every penny I spend this Christmas according to Your guidance and in ways that lift up Jesus. Help me to make worship the center of my Christmas celebrations rather than family time or gift giving.
In the Name of the One Who Came to Show Us Your Love, Amen.
