Welcome to Swift Lumber Inc., we are a family owned Southern Yellow Pine sawmill located in Atmore, Alabama; where the Swift family has been in business for nearly a century. We produce a variety of forest products; including, pine lumber, utility poles, marine piling, fenceposts, new heart pine flooring and pine timbers. We have a number of different departments that help us to create such a diverse number of products. These departments include the lumber department; which is comprised of the sawmill, boilers, dry-kilns, planermill, and remanufacturing plant - as well as our shipping department, our pole mill and the treating plant. The CCA treating plant handles all of our in-house products; plus, contract chemical treatment of outside products for customers. For more information regarding these departments, just click on the imbedded links or use the navigation bar to the left. The term "Southern Yellow Pine", or SYP, is a general commercial grouping of four different genuses of pine that can be found in the area; specifically, Longleaf, Loblolly, Slash and Shortleaf. These four types are characterized by their rich lustrous grain, which ranges in color from a pale yellow to a deep red. Longleaf Pine lumber is especially appealing due to it's slower growth rate and heartwood. We realize that quality forest products are only as good as the trees from which they are sawn and the skill of the hands that shape them. Here at Swift Lumber we are blessed to have an abundance of both - plenty of beautiful Longleaf Pine forests in our area and a number of seasoned craftsmen in our workforce. These two key elements combined have helped to earn us a reputation in the lumber industry for quality manufacturing that brings out the inherent beauty of Southern Pine. Today's lumber industry is extremely volatile, and numerous small mills have been forced to shut their doors due to an inability to compete with larger corporations. As a family owned sawmill, Swift Lumber is working very hard not to join the ranks of these closed mills, and we have adopted a number of strategies to help us do so. We are cutting a wide variety of wood products, many of which are available manufactured to custom specifications; including, lumber, poles and pilings, flooring and pattern stocks. Here, we maintain a commitment to excellence and to constant improvement, and we believe this is one of the biggest reasons we are surviving in this dwindling lumber market. Over the many years we have been in business, we have had time to perfect our technique and the quality of the finished product.
As a small, family owned sawmill, we strive to have a positive impact on the community. Swift Lumber is a member of the local community in more ways than just as an employer; it is a business comprised of many individual members of the community as well as an individual member itself. Community involvement and contribution are both very important activities to us. We often set up booths and exhibits at local festivals, and employees can often be found volunteering their time at work, to local organizations like the VFW and helping to keep our town's parks and school playgrounds in good shape.
