Dental Mission Trip 2010
This year Pediatric & Adolescent Dentistry is hosting their second annual Dental Mission trip in Mexico from July 3rd - July 10th. Dr. Lauten Johnson, Sara Claire Martin, and Claire Mitchell along with seven others from Alabama will be traveling to Isla Mujeres, Mexico to educate citizens of all ages about dental hygiene and perform much needed dental care for many people. One person joining Dr. Johnson on the trip is a Dental student at UAB who wanted to gain some hands-on experience in a place where their services will be greatly appreciated. With only three members who speak fluent Spanish, the group has been given permission to use the only dental clinic in the area to house dental procedures such as cleanings and extractions.
"Mission work brought me to dentistry", says Dr. Johnson. Before attending UAB Dental School, Dr. Johnson participated in dental mission trips to Peru, Mexico, and Costa Rica. "Dental care is needed so badly everywhere but not accessible to many countries; which is why I think that it is important to do this trip annually".
