What is the Stickley Difference? Stickley furniture is defined by quality. They use Quartersawn White oak which is a method of sawing oak so the cut it made parallel to the wood's medullary rays instead of across. This special cut yields a limited quantity of top grade boards featuring ray flake, the decorative wavy pattern prominent in quartersawn wood.
In addition to the quartersawn oak, Stickley's constructions standards meet the quality standards you would expect to find in the furniture you choose from Townhouse Galleries. They use Quadralinear posts, which is when four quatersawn solid white oak boards are mitered and then glued around the center post. Blind Dovetailed Cross Rails are also a Stickley standard which strengthens the case from side to side. This joint is self-locking even without glue, and separation of the end panels is impossible, unless the wood is split apart. Dowel joints rely on glue which can fail over time.
Stickley's tongue and groove joints ensures accurate board alignment and strong glue joints which permits increased lumber thickness for solid, lasting furniture. The glues are chemical-free, water-based binders that doesn't contain or release volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Their leather is dyed using water-based solvents and pigments offering 35 environmentally friendly leathers made through natural, chrome free, chemical free processes. The cushions include soy-based foam, which is fully recyclable and available in a wide assortment of firmness and densities. (The foam is also free of CFCs)!
The American Leather factory is committed to conservation. They use automatic light shut-offs, encourage recycling and a focus on environmentally conscious decisions by all their employees...
