The YMCA has had presence in the Shoals since its charter was established in 1966. The current Y building was constructed at the present site of 2121 Helton Drive in 1979. A much-needed addition and remodeling were completed early in 2002 that expanded the services and scope of the YMCA. The YMCA of the Shoals now has a 46,107 square foot facility that boasts a state-of-the-art wellness center, spacious aerobics room and a multi-faceted, indoor aquatic center. The options within the facility are numerous.
Families of the Shoals can benefit from the before and after school services offered by the Y. Children may be dropped off at the Y beginning at 6:30 a.m. The children will be transported to school in time for breakfast. In the afternoon, buses will bring them back to the YMCA where they will receive a snack and tutoring. The children also will be able to participate in any of our kids programs (i.e. gymnastics, karate, or kids aerobics). In the summer, day camp provides the children with opportunities to do crafts, free swim, and play in various ways.
Not only are families served by the before and after school program, but children and adults alike have so many fitness opportunities that it is hard to choose. The Aquatic Center offers a whirlpool, a steam room, a sauna, and 2 heated indoor pools for recreation, water aerobic classes, arthritis classes, lap swimming, and swim lessons. A variety of aerobics classes meet in the aerobics room including spinning, abs classes, step, and active older adult classes. Many of our members participate in pilates and yoga classes.
