Mr. Chenault practiced as a sole practitioner until joined by his son in 1974. Stephen V. Hammond joined the firm in 1979. Erick K. Pratt joined the firm as an associate in 2002.
The firm is a general practice firm with emphasis in civil and criminal litigation and bankruptcy law. The firm has an AV rating by Martindale-Hubbell and is listed in Bests Recommended Insurance Attorneys, The Law List, The Insurance Bar and other insurance defense publications. William L. Chenault, III, Stephen V. Hammond and Erick K. Pratt have active civil practices. Both Mr. Chenault and Mr. Hammond are members of the Alabama Defense Lawyers Association and the Defense Research Institute. Mr. Hammond has handled almost every conceivable type of civil litigation, but has particular expertise in medical malpractice, construction, automobile and trucking claims. He was attorney of record in St. Paul Insurance Co. vs. Cromeans, 771 F. supp. 349 (N.D. Ala. 1991), holding for the first time in Alabama that sexual misconduct by a physician was not covered under a malpractice insurance policy. On the plaintiffs side, the firm filed the first Triana DDT case and has handled many personal injury cases.
Mr. Chenault, Mr. Hammond and Mr. Pratt also have active family law practices, including divorce, custody, child support and contempt proceedings. Mr. Hammond was counsel of record in the seminal case of Ex parte Brewington, 445 So. 2d 294, on remand, Blair v. Blair, 445 So. 2d 297, overruling Reynolds v. Reynolds, 274 Ala. 477, 149 So. 2d 770 (1961). This case was the first in Alabama to recognize that a parent had a continuing duty of support, beyond the age of majority, for a mentally and physically handicapped child, overruling a long line of cases holding that a parents duty of support ended at the age of majority.
Mr. Chenault has an extensive bankruptcy practice, representing both creditor and debtor clients. He has handled complex and major Chapter 11 reorganization cases in North Alabama.
Mr. Pratt also has an active criminal defense docket and assists both Mr. Hammond and Mr. Chenault in their civil defense practices.
